right before everyone stopped wearing it?
Embarrassing, huh? What did you do?
Rock it boldly and ignore the raised eyebrows?
Hide it and pray it would come back into vogue?
Good luck with that.
Gentlemen, stop wasting your money on trends!
Instead, choose timeless pieces that never go out of style. Those are the items you can spend big on. You’ll wear them for years and get great value out of them in spite of the steep investment they often require at the beginning.
Sure, you could just buy new cheap fashion items every season. The trouble with that is, you’ll never look as good as the man next to you who invests in quality and timeless style.
Today I’m going to tell you how to choose and wear five evergreen classic items.
This article is brought to you by a classic I saw EVERYWHERE at my recent Menfluential conference: Vincero luxury men’s watches. I met so many men who love these timepieces. I also met Jerrod and Anthony, two of Vincero’s movers and shakers. These guys, and the brand they represent, are the real deal.
Even though Vincero watches look quite expensive, any man can afford them. They’re beautiful, versatile pieces that will add a touch of panache to any outfit. Maybe some of these items have never struck you as timeless. You might not even agree that all of them are in style. But the following will give you a sense of WHY some items are classics, and others just an embarrassing heap at the back of your closet.
The suit is the crown jewel of a stylish man’s wardrobe. Why? Because wearing one makes you look good in SO many ways. It builds up your chest and shoulders. It slims your waistline. It makes you look taller. It even makes your hands look bigger. The suit, gentlemen, is a clear signal of power.
A suit makes you look stronger and more masculine. Whether you’re tall, short, fat, or skinny, a suit can work wonders for you. Just make sure you find one that won’t go to go out of style. Here are some specific details to look for.
Nail The Fit
If it doesn’t fit in the shoulders and chest right off the rack, don’t buy it. These are too hard to adjust. The waist can be taken in (or let out, if there’s enough fabric) by up to 2 inches. The jacket should be just long enough to cover your buttocks and to reach your knuckles. Usually, it can be shortened by an inch to an inch and a half. A jacket that’s a little short can’t be lengthened. It can work for shorter men, but men over 6 feet tall should go for a different one.
Make sure your jacket sleeves are the right length. I like to show about a quarter to one inch of the shirt cuff underneath. Taller, bigger guys can show a bit more more. If you’re a smaller guy, about a quarter to a half inch is enough. Sleeve length is quite easy to adjust on most off-the-rack suits.
Don’t forget the trousers. They’re also very easy to adjust. If you’re under 5’7″, you can make your legs look longer by going for no break or a quarter break on the trouser’s hem. If you’re above 6′, go for a half or full break. And if your trousers have a baggy seat, get that taken in. It’s not a good look.
Suit Fabrics And Colors
Always go with 100% worsted wool if you can afford it. Since wool is a luxury material, it’s always going to cost a bit more, but its look and drape are inimitable.
I recommend navy blue if you’re an older guy. This choice will keep the color in your skin and make you look younger. If you’re 18 and you look like you’re 15, go for charcoal gray to make you look stronger and more mature. As for black, I almost always advise against it. It’ll make you look washed out unless you’re REALLY high contrast. Save black for Black Tie.
I know a lot of you are saying, “Come on, Antonio. Watches are so outdated. I can just check the time on my phone.” Fair enough. But you’ll find it much quicker to check the time with a watch. You’ll also get distracted less easily.
Wearing a watch is about so much more than checking the hour. It’s about your relationship with time. It tells the world who you are, and that your time matters.
Wearing an attractive watch can get you a lot of the right kind of attention. A luxury watch in a bold, classic style is a great conversation-starter. It’ll set you apart, both at work and in social settings.
You may be thinking to yourself, “Get with the program, Antonio. Ties are actually on the decline.” Only if you’re looking at very recent history. Let’s go back thousands of years and look at the Terracotta Soldiers in China. What do we see? They’re wearing scarves.
Or go back just a few hundred years to the Napoleonic wars. What did the Croats wear? Bright-colored neckerchiefs to identify their military units. Based on the word “Croat”, people started calling them “cravats”.
Believe it or not, we also see colorful neckwear in nature, where it serves a similar purpose. Animals and birds often have bright color around their neck area to draw attention to themselves. Passing trends aside, men will always find a way to wear quality colored neckwear.
Neckties are a rare splash of bright color in the often drab male wardrobe, and that color sends a message. A red necktie signals confidence. Purple symbolizes royalty. Awhile back, I designed a tie with a regimental stripe in classic U.S. Navy colors, adding interest by showing the tie’s military heritage. Little things like this allow you to identify with certain clubs, military organizations, and universities that you hold dear.
And how about scarves? Silk scarves can immediately bring color to an otherwise dull outfit and draw attention to your chest and face. A bright wool scarf in the winter can do the same thing.
Scarves are often purely functional, which is another reason why neckwear is going to stick around. It has a job to do. Pilots used to wear silk scarves to protect them from high winds. Wool scarves protect you from the cold today.
#4. A Signature Fragrance
We all use deodorant, right? We don’t want to smell bad. It has a powerful effect on how we’re judged.
So why don’t more men realize that the effect of smelling GOOD is just as powerful? You can use that power to your advantage.
Animals often use scent to attract and identify each other. Do the same thing. Search for a signature scent that you can wear to create a memorable impression of yourself. Be remembered. Pleasantly.
Headwear will never go out of style. I know it seems like men don’t wear classic hats nowadays. That’s true, unfortunately. They wear baseball hats more often. But they’re still putting something on their heads.
Why? Hot sun, cold wind, bad hair, maybe a little less hair. Men have all kinds of functional reasons for wearing hats. Like scarves, hats have a job to do, which is why they’ll always be with us.
Want to stand out? Break today’s mold and try some classic headwear. Don’t worry, you can still find a functional way to wear it. Hot outside? Want some protection from the sun? Try a straw fedora!
When it’s cold (which is often…I live in Wisconsin), I wear a black wool flat cap. It’s far more stylish than a baseball cap, and warmer too. You can always find a way to wear hats stylishly.
Notice the common thread here? Things that never go out of style aren’t just decorative. They serve a practical purpose. Bonus: they make you more attractive while doing it.
For instance, did you know wearing a watch makes you more punctual? A phone might do the job, but a watch does the job with swift professionalism and levels up your style in the process.
Case in point? Vincero’s bold luxury watches. They’re an amazing deal, with a 24-month warranty and free shipping anywhere. What’s more, they’re eye-catching and unique. Ever seen marble in a watch? How about green marble?
Vincero Watches have so many beautiful dials and color combinations, with interchangeable straps in quality Italian leather. My favorites are the Bellwether and Chrono collections. What are yours? Click here to check out Vincero and get a great discount. But be quick about it. It won’t last.
